Update post. Take off every ‘Zig’.

Merines here. Been a quiet month for Formula, seeing as how we’re not doing anything. Well, we’re supposed to be doing a new-old project as a joint with another group, but the TL has been feeling slowbro.png for the past four months, so I’ve given up on that project for now. We lost martino to real life, so I’m the only original member left.

As far as I know, we’re still slotted to pick up CANAAN this July, which I am looking forward to very much. Also, I’m announcing a new joint project with Chibi, Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou. I’ve no clue what it’s about, but it passed Meltingice’s “does it have cute girls” test. It starts July 11.

Honestly, I’m probably shutting the group down and quitting fansubbing after these shows are done. Just had enough of the ’scene’. The one exception would be Tales of Symphonia OVA Series 2, but the TL who did the first OVAs has been gone for a while, so I’ve no clue if we’ll be able to manage it when the time comes.

Phantom dropped (again).

Yes, I (Merines) waffled back and forth about the issue of dropping this show, and I dragged the team along with me. But I’ve decided that putting my team and Chibi’s team in any legal trouble is not worth providing a largely redundant service.

Fansubs are anime subs for fans by fans, right? The whole “boo hoo, it’s not HD, it’s not a pretty font, it doesn’t have exploding rainbow karaoke” stuff that many people cry to justify not using FUNimation’s free, legal steaming service is irrelevant. Fans get free subs before even Japan gets to watch it on TV, legally. We can’t even do that illegally!

So yes, we’re done with Phantom. I’ve made a permanent page on the site with the instructions to allow region-blocked folks to watch Funimation’s streams so that everyone can continue enjoying the show. We’re glad those of you who watched our version enjoyed it.

We’ll be back in July for CANAAN.

Keeping abreast of the situation.

in after “lol breast”

So then, now we have a way for people in blocked regions to watch Funimation’s streams of Phantom (thanks to a kind /a/nonymous). Jade’s wordpress is gone. Menclave and Desire have dropped, with Desire even supposedly received a C&D. Eclipse’s website/tracker was taken down at Funimation’s request even though it’s based in Germany (for FMA2).

I’m finding it harder and harder to justify continuing to release Phantom. That’d mean risking losing not only our website but Chibi’s as well, plus putting whatever tracker we’d use in the crosshairs.

Let us know what you think.

Someone from Europe test this for us.

See if you can’t watch Funimation’s streams from a blocked region using this method, kthx.

Funimation picks up Phantom.

Episode 04 was on Funimation’s site hours before it aired in Japan, somehow.
Anyhow, in compliance with our normal policy, regrettably, we’ll be dropping Phantom after episode 03. The streams will be out faster than our version, plus they’re perfectly legal. I’m personally happy the show’s been licensed and hope to see some DVDs for sale in the future.

edit: We’re considering not dropping it. Funi’s license only covers web streaming. Our logic for continuing is this: We’re slow, and not many people get our version (Desire/Ayako for speed and Conmen for achive, right?). So, really, how much ad revenue is lost by 2K people grabbing our version a week after the stream comes online? /me shrugs

edit2: It appears we are not dropping this yet. Our torrents for the PV and episodes 1 & 2 have been removed from Scarywater by request of Media Factory via BayTSP. They may or may not be rehosted on another tracker at some point in the future.

So, why did we decide not to drop when we always have in the past? Well, fansubbing isn’t any more illegal just because official streams are around. In the same way, it’s not somehow more legal when a series isn’t licensed. If the show had been licensed for DVDs, as we originally thought, we’d drop the show. Putting out a sub means putting something out that will linger on the internet for a very long time and can have a definable injury to DVD sales. However, putting out a sub at least a week after an official stream becomes available has a much smaller negative impact on the licensor’s profit. It’s been said that Funimation makes 1 U.S. cent per view. Torrent downloads for each episode we’ve released totaled under 2,000. So then, does depriving a corporation of 20USD revenue makes us evil, R1 licensor-hating pirates? I don’t think so.

I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who watches our releases to also watch Funimation’s streams. I will be (after I’ve done my part of the fansubbing so I’m not influenced by their editing and such). Not that I’m saying that watching their version makes downloading a fansub more legal, but the moral weight is lessened at least.

Slow this week due to exams and random disasters.

Also, I’ll be attending Otakon this year. I’ll wear a shirt that says “Formula Sub Will Nevar Die.”
P.S., not really, but I will be there.
